Join representatives from Mystic Seaport for a history of marine navigation, from early celestial navigation techniques, through the “Quest for Longitude,” to the centralization of navigation around the world along the Prime Meridian. After the presentation, participants will have the opportunity to try measuring the distance between an object in the sky and the horizon with a sextant. Reproductions of other navigation tools will be on hand to pick up and explore, including an actual early-20th century chronometer. This program is produced in conjunction with our latest exhibition, Charting Your Course: Cutting-Edge Navigation and Navigation.
