This lecture by Jennifer “Jenny” Stettler Parsons, Ph.D., Associate Curator at the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, will explore the breadth of artists and traditions that have flourished in Connecticut in the 19th and 20th centuries and continue today. Hear from Dr. Parsons about Hartford-affiliated artists like Frederic Church of the Hudson River School and still-life artist Charles Ethan Porter. Art colonies in Old Lyme and Greenwich attracted artists such as Childe Hassam and John Henry Twatchman to the Connecticut shoreline. Modernists Alexander Calder and Anni Albers experimented with different materials and abstraction. Finally, hear about how Dr. Parsons has worked with contemporary artists at the Florence Griswold Museum, where they continue to push the boundaries and definitions of art while broadening the narrative of art history.

In her scholarship and museum practice, Parsons is committed to developing projects that bring collaborative, forward-thinking approaches to the FloGris collection and to generating new interest in its historic narrative through innovative exhibitions. With the Museum’s Artist-in-Residence program, which she established and has directed since 2019, Parsons seeks to amplify the perspectives of artists who give audiences a new lens through which to understand history and our present moment.

She holds a Ph.D. in Art & Architectural History from the University of Virginia, an MA in Art History and Museum Studies from George Washington University, and a BA in Art History from the University of Delaware. Prior to joining the FloGris, she held positions and fellowships at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and The Phillips Collection.
