Pequot Library presents a fun and informative presentation by acclaimed writer and humorist Charles Monagan as discusses his latest book, Connecticut Icons: Symbols of the Nutmeg State, which sold out all three printings. The book profiles 50 places, natural features, buildings, foods, and other things that are “especially Connecticut” and in Monagan’s words, “everyone here thinks they know about but probably don’t.” Books will be available for purchase and signing.
Monagan has been a writer and editor for more than 45 years. He worked at Connecticut Magazine as a staff writer, assistant editor, and editor, and then left to write The Neurotic’s Handbook, The Reluctant Naturalist, and Poodles From Hell (with New Yorker cartoonist Mick Stevens). After a stint as the governor’s speech writer, he returned to Connecticut Magazine, serving as editor from 1989 to 2013. During this period, he wrote How to Get a Monkey into Harvard and Connecticut Icons. In 2011, he wrote the script and lyrics for the musical Mad Bomber. In 2016, Penmore Press published his first novel, Carrie Welton, honored as an Editor’s Choice by the Historical Novel Society. In 2017, Globe Pequot republished Connecticut Icons with additional icons, updates, and a new cover.
