South Korean director Lee Chang-dong’s highly acclaimed 2018 film Burning is based on the Murakami short story “Barn Burning.” However, the director has said that William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” is “just as important” to his film and describes Burning as the “story of a young Faulkner living in the age of Murakami.” Join us for a screening of Burning and a post-movie discussion on its connections to Faulkner’s short story and the American author’s continued relevance in art and politics. Reading Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” before the screening is encouraged but not necessary. The discussion will be led by film enthusiast Connor Simcox from the circulation team.
