Affectionate Communication: An exploration of risks & benefits of a pivotal message
A course presented by the Open MINDS Institute in collaboration with Quick Center for the Arts

Affectionate communication describes those expressions of liking, love, and fondness that we express to others. Affectionate communication takes many forms, both verbal and nonverbal. This type of communication is both a basic interpersonal need and a form of relationship maintenance. This course will discuss the various ways we view affection, its role in maintaining established relationships, and the physiological benefits of affection. We will also discuss the risks of affectionate communication, ranging from rejection to face-threats to deception.

Instructor: Sean Horan, Ph.D.
Dr. Sean Horan is chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Communication Department.

Dr. Horan, who was impressively identified as the fifth most published communication researcher between the years of 2012-2016, and the 21st most central communication scholar from 2007-2011, began his tenure in the fall of 2018. His research primarily examines deceptive affection – how and why people use affection deceptively through lies and/or withholding information – and his current research interests explore the fascinating communicative implications of workplace romance, a unique situation where work and life domains are blended.

He is the author of a monthly series for Psychology Today titled “Adventures in Dating,” described as a savvy guide to courtship and communication. His original research has been the subject of various national and international media stories and has been featured in the Times of India, Axapneε (Greece), Africa News Post, Fox News, Quo (Spain and Mexico), and Men’s Health, among others. Likewise, his expert commentary has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, ABC News, CNN, The Washington Post, and the New York Daily News.
