Mandela's Continent: Rare Books Exhibition

Wednesday, February 12, 2014, 10:00am - 06:00pm

enew africa mandelaExhibition runs January 12 - March 30, 2014. Open daily during regular library hours.

"Let us understand how precious words are . . ."
       Nelson Mandela

Organized by Pequot Library, Mandela's Continent features books from Pequot Library's collections on travel & exploration in Africa, the history of Africa, and some excellent award-winning fiction.

Taking the viewer from the 19th century into the 21st, this small exhibition of rare books is engaging and subtly powerful.

This exhibition is in honor of Nelson Mandela who died at age 95 on December 5, 2013.

The books on display represent a selection of works about Africa from Pequot Library's Special Collections. In addition, there are items on loan from private collections. The majority of books are about nineteenth-century colonial Africa, under European control at the time of Mandela’s birth. Many images from these early editions show an idealized, bucolic vision of the continent. The fictional works illustrate grittier realities and bring the exhibition through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first.

This exhibition is in memory of Dick Carpenter, 1926 - 2012
A Pequot Library Association member and long-time Book Sale volunteer, Richard M. Carpenter will be missed by all at Pequot Library.

To celebrate Dick's life, his family made a gift to the Constance C. Baker Book Fund. This fund was established to support the care and presentation of the Pequot Library's rare book collection. Through the Carpenter Family's generosity, this exhibition of Mandela's Continent is made possible. Thank you.
