Music for Youth and Pequot Library present the Calefax Reed Quintet.
The Calefax Quintet is a totally unique ensemble with unique instrumentation. It is a reed quintet, in contrast to other ensembles known as wind quintets. These five Dutchmen, Oliver Boekhoorn, oboe; Ivar Berix, clarinet; Raaf Hekkema, saxophone; Jelte Altius bass clarinet; and Alban Wesly, bassoon, fly in from Amsterdam to play the March concert for Music for Youth. Now in their 25th season, Calefax has played over 600 concerts in 20 countries around the world. The musicians perform standing up and introduce themselves and their music to the audience. Well known for their virtuoso playing and innovative programming, they arrange and interpret music from eight centuries to suit their unique instrumental line-up – from early music, renaissance, baroque and romantic works to jazz and world premieres.
Calefax’s growing discography includes best selling CDs of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations and Ravel’s LeTombeau de Couperin.
In addition to their concerts Calafax offers master classes and workshops. To sign up for master classes after the Music for Youth concert, call 203-938-3843 or e-mail
